Guided by Love

Story Contributors: Siennah Lutusu’esu’e & Kristen Fihaki

In this storytelling session Siennah and Kristen share their testimony on identity, faith and family. Their story highlights the importance of maintaining one's authenticity and recognizing that family members are often undergoing their own process of unlearning biases.

“I thought after telling her, things would be easier, but it was very hard…it was a hard time.”

“I can only imagine other kids who felt the same thing that Kristen felt, that I felt - you know. Being scared about coming out, being rejected, feeling unloved, unwanted…it’s scary. But the reason we wanted to share these stories is to tell people that it does get better. It’s not always going to be dark.”

“As we grow up, we’ve learned that even adults are learning. Even adults - your parents, your aunts, your uncles…they’re learning and unlearning at the same time. I think that’s what helped us get a better understanding with our family.”

“I think that’s what I’m most proud of, never changing for someone else. Never let other people’s words, values, whatever they have against you ruin that.”
